Google’s Wear OS 5.1: The Future of Pixel Watch 2 Powered by Android 15

According to replies on a post at reddit (via: 9to5Google), Wear OS is being tested in an upcoming version that could be v5.1 just as the test highlighted by our tipster clearly states it's running either "2018-08" or "2018-09." Last big According to reports, these test builds have been found on the Pixel Watch 2 and could reveal that the OS is Android version 15. That would be a big change, since previous Wear OS versions have usually been based on the prior year's Android version. Last year’s Wear OS 3, for example was based on the then-new Android 13 released in (checks notes) last August.

What's New in Wear OS 5.1?

Android Authority reports that — in perhaps a break of tradition, with Wear OS 5.1 not yet existing and being based on the still-in-development Android 15 itself That would mean a significant departure from the pattern in previous years. Wear OS 5, which launched alongside the Galaxy Watch 7 in July—well it was built on Android 14. That update, Wear OS 3.5, was released last October and if the new information on version number is accurate it would mark its first mid-cycle release for approximately two years from Google(to be clear though nothing here indicates this at all!) The name "Wear OS 5.1," however, is one that Google could purportedly still decide to scrap before its release from the manufacturer gates.

The test builds of Wear OS 5.1 reportedly carry identifiers starting with "AP4A." However, details about new features or the expected release date remain scarce.

Changes to Watch Faces in Wear OS 5

In Wear OS 5, Google announced a new framework standard for watch faces under the Watch Face Format (WFF). This new watches face will be debuting with the Wear OS H update and as such, this effectively means any watch faces on models not built for WFF are sunsetted in terms of support from now. Old smartwatches using Wear OS 2 and later won't be able to use current non-WFF watch faces, but can still work on oldWear OS5.smartwatch Face not transferred. Also, sorry to break it for you if now several other watch faces are not in the Google Store anymore.

The switch to WFF began in 2023, when Google collaborated with Samsung and aimed for better watch face design & user experience.

What Does This Mean for Pixel Watch 2 Users?

If you own a Pixel Watch 2 or plan to get one, you might be among the first to experience this new Wear OS 5.1, which could bring enhanced performance and features thanks to its Android 15 base. As Google continues to test this OS, more information is likely to emerge, including potential new features and the official release date.

For now, smartwatch enthusiasts and developers should stay tuned for further updates, as Wear OS 5.1 could represent a significant step forward for Android-based wearables.
