GTA 6 release date window: All eyes on 2025
Rockstar has now confirmed that GTA 6 will launch in "Fall 2025," dispelling any speculation that it may take longer. Thanks to the debut trailer for the game, we already knew that GTA 6 would release sometime in 2025, but now we have a better sense of when to expect Rockstar's epic.
The announcement of the new date follows a Kotaku report indicating that Rockstar was concerned that GTA 6 work was lagging and would affect the 2025 release window. A number of Rockstar's developers have voiced concerns about the company's decision to return all of its staff to full-time in-office employment five days a week, especially in light of possible implications for the sequel.
GTA 6 platforms: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S confirmed
It has been revealed thus far that GTA 6 will launch on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The announcement that "GTA 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X|S games and entertainment systems in 2025" was made public by Take Two in an official press release.
Is GTA 6 coming to the Xbox One and PS4?
According to the official press release, GTA 6 will only be available on the PS5 and Xbox Series X when it comes in 2025; it will not be available on the PS4 or Xbox One. It is therefore a current-generation exclusive game.
What's happening with the GTA 6 PC release?
As of right now, there's no word on a PC release, which could indicate that it will go the same path as some of the previous GTA games, which came out on consoles first and then made their way to the PC later.
We also wouldn't hold our breath for a quick PC release, as a former developer said that Rockstar is more focused on "what sells" and that GTA 6 will most likely take some time to release on the PC. Another former developer made a similar prediction, stating that Grand Theft Auto 6 would probably not be published for the PC for "a long time."
GTA 6 characters: Introducing Lucia
In the official trailer, which introduced us to the game's characters, the first female lead in Grand Theft Auto 6—Lucia—was emphasized. Even though there's still a lot about her character that we don't know, the trailer drops some hints: she wears prison attire, indicating that she has undoubtedly been afoul of the law. In addition, Lucia is frequently seen alongside an unidentified male character who appears to be playing a major part in the upcoming entry. His identity is unknown, despite the fact that he has gone by the names James and Jason in the past. The two seem to have a connection, or a relationship that is similar to Bonnie and Clyde.
GTA 6 location: We're heading back to Vice City
Vice City is returned in Grand Theft Auto 6. Although the first game took place in 1986, the 2025 version is supposed to take place in what looks to be a contemporary setting. We're traveling to the state of Leonida, which is "home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond," according to a Rockstar announcement. Vice City looks to be a portion of a larger territory that will constitute Grand Theft Auto 6, which is slated to be the "biggest, most immersive evolution of Grand Theft Auto yet".
The teaser has already given us a peek of a more gorgeous Vice City than we knew, with its portrayal of rural Florida that is just as chaotic as the real thing. We'll have to wait and see whether we can go to some famous places like Starfish Island and some historical places like the Ocean View Hotel, Little Haiti, and the Malibu Club.
Fans have already begun comparing the new clip to the scenes from the first Vice City, as the teaser showed, highlighting just how meticulously detailed the upgraded version of the place is.
GTA 6 announcement: When was GTA 6 confirmed?
The initial announcement of GTA 6 was made by Rockstar Games in February 2022, when they quietly revealed that the game is "well underway" as part of a larger update for GTA Online and GTA 5. Rockstar stated, "On behalf of our entire team, we thank you all for your support and cannot wait to step into the future with you," following the announcement that Grand Theft Auto 6 is in "active development."
Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar, confirmed in August 2022 that GTA 6 development is "well underway" in the business's financial results release.
